Background of the Study

Malnutrition, particularly among the elderly, is a critical health issue that compromises immune function and increases susceptibility to infections and chronic diseases (Okafor & Bello, 2024). Aging is associated with a decline in immune efficiency, and inadequate nutrient intake further weakens immune responses, making older adults more vulnerable to illnesses (Adamu et al., 2023). Key nutrients such as protein, vitamins A, C, D, and zinc are essential for maintaining immune function, yet many elderly individuals experience deficiencies due to poor dietary intake, economic challenges, or medical conditions (Yusuf & Ibrahim, 2024).

In Kwara State, malnutrition among the elderly is prevalent due to food insecurity, inadequate healthcare access, and lack of nutritional awareness. This study investigates the effects of malnutrition on immune function among the elderly, aiming to identify key nutritional deficiencies and recommend interventions for improved health.

Statement of the Problem

Elderly individuals in Kwara State face significant nutritional challenges that may impair their immune function, increasing their risk of infections, slow wound healing, and chronic illnesses. However, there is limited research on how malnutrition specifically affects immune responses in this population. This study seeks to bridge this gap by evaluating the nutritional status of elderly individuals and its impact on their immune health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of malnutrition among elderly individuals in Kwara State.

  2. To examine the impact of malnutrition on immune function in the elderly.

  3. To propose dietary interventions for improving immune health among the elderly.

Research Questions

  1. What is the nutritional status of elderly individuals in Kwara State?

  2. How does malnutrition affect the immune function of the elderly?

  3. What dietary strategies can enhance immune health among older adults?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Malnutrition is significantly associated with weakened immune function in the elderly.

  2. Elderly individuals with adequate nutrient intake have stronger immune responses.

  3. Nutritional interventions can improve immune function and overall health in aging populations.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on elderly individuals in Kwara State, assessing their nutritional status and immune function. Limitations include variations in immune function due to pre-existing health conditions and genetic factors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Malnutrition: A condition resulting from inadequate or imbalanced nutrient intake, affecting health and immunity.

  • Immune Function: The body’s ability to fight infections and diseases.

  • Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients necessary for proper bodily functions.
